During Russian attack on September 25, Ukraine's defense forces shot down 28 out of 32 drones, including a Russian Shahed-136 drone equipped with Starlink satellite communication from SpaceX.

The photos, obtained by Defense Express, show a satellite antenna with visible serial numbers. This could allow investigators to trace the supply channels of the Starlink terminal.

Previously, Russian forces experimented with 4G modems using Ukrainian SIM cards.

Now, the communication system provides a wide and powerful feedback channel with the drone, enabling the transmission of information and the ability to change its flight mission from any distance. Essentially, this turns the Shahed into an advanced reconnaissance tool.

Starlink may be crucial for the Russian forces to transmit intelligence, such as data collected by radio equipment on the positions of Ukraine's air defenses. If equipped with cameras, the drone could also send images. With Starlink, Russia can turn the Shahed into a long-range loitering munition capable of conducting reconnaissance and striking moving targets.

The choice of the Shahed platform for these purposes could be tied to its range of approximately 2,000 km and its significant internal space in the fuselage.

Although Starlink is not available or sold in Russia, they procure it through third countries.
