A Russian man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison on charges of “high treason” after reportedly donating $54 to support Ukraine’s military, reported the Moscow City Court on November 8.

The court accused Alexander Kraychik, 34, of “financial assistance to a foreign state” in a way that allegedly “threatened the security of the Russian Federation.”

Authorities say Kraychik donated approximately $54 on February 26, 2022, just two days after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The funds reportedly went to a German organization collecting money to support Ukraine’s armed forces.

Rights groups report that Kraychik was arrested in 2023 at a Moscow airport while attempting to board a flight to Turkey.

His arrest came after a search by Russia’s Federal Security Service, during which his phone was seized.

The court issued Kraychik’s 13-year sentence on November 1 but made the verdict public only on November 8, stating that Kraychik had acted out of “political and ideological hatred.”

In addition, Russia sought to imprison a Ukrainian teenager for an alleged donation to the Azov regiment.
