Russian Attack on Ukraine Is Putin’s “True Response” to Recent Visits and Calls, Ukraine FM Says

Russia’s recent large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine represents “a response from the Russian Vladimir Putin to leaders who have recently engaged with him,” stated Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on X (twitter).
“Russia launched one of its largest aerial assaults, deploying drones and missiles against peaceful cities, civilians, and critical infrastructure,” Sybiha wrote. “This is a direct answer from a war criminal to those who have called or met with him in recent days. Peace must be achieved through strength, not appeasement.”
The statement comes amid international efforts to address Russia’s ongoing aggression. On November 15, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz held a phone call with Putin. According to the Bundestag’s press office, Scholz condemned Russia’s war in Ukraine, urging an immediate withdrawal of troops and expressing Germany’s commitment to supporting Ukraine.
The overnight attack on November 17 targeted multiple regions across Ukraine. Russia used a combination of missiles and attack drones, including Kalibr cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and air-launched Kinzhal missiles. Strategic bombers, such as Tu-95 aircraft, were also involved. Explosions were reported in Kyiv and other cities.
