A Russian military helicopter may have been accidentally shot down by its own air defenses in the Rostov region during a large-scale drone attack, according to Ukrainian defense outlet Militarnyi, citing Russian sources on March 4.

Reports suggest the incident occurred late in the evening on March 3 near the town of Millerovo, Rostov region. According to preliminary information circulating in Russian channels, members of the helicopter’s crew were killed in the crash.

The exact model of the helicopter has not yet been identified, and Russian authorities have not officially confirmed the loss.

The aircraft was reportedly deployed to intercept Ukrainian drones during a wave of attacks targeting the region.

Information about the number of casualties among the crew remains unclear. As of the morning of March 4, no official statements had been released regarding the incident.

Earlier in the day, Rostov region governor Yury Slyusar reported that “dozens of UAVs” had targeted the area overnight. According to the governor, Russian forces repelled the drone attack in the Millerovsky and Tarasovsky districts.

Images circulating on Russian social media allegedly show debris from the crashed helicopter, though their authenticity has not yet been verified.

Russian pro-government commentators and military bloggers have suggested that Russian air defense units may have mistakenly engaged the helicopter, possibly misidentifying it as a Ukrainian drone during the chaotic nighttime operation.

This is by far not the first case of friendly fire in the Russian Army in general and the Air Force in particular. Earlier, Russian air defenses accidentally shot down one of their own warplanes overnight while attempting to intercept Ukrainian drones.

Monitoring channels later reported that the downed aircraft was likely a Russian Su-30SM fighter jet.
