Russian troops have executed three Ukrainian prisoners of war near the village of Novopil in Ukraine’s Donetsk region.

The shooting happened in the village of Novopil, Volnovakha district, according to a statement from the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office on May 3.

The pre-trial investigation is being led under the procedural guidance of the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office and is focused on the commission of a war crime causing the deaths of the servicemen, in violation of Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

Operational data indicates that the three soldiers were performing combat missions at positions near Novopil when they were surrounded by Russian forces during an assault.

The Russian military forced the Ukrainian defenders to surrender and lay down their arms. Once the soldiers could no longer resist, the Russian forces reportedly shot them with automatic weapons.

“The deliberate killing of prisoners of war is a gross violation of the Geneva Conventions and qualifies as a grave international crime,” stated the Ukrainian Office of the Prosecutor General.

Urgent investigative actions are currently underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible for committing the crime.

The pre-trial investigation is being carried out by the Main Directorate of the Security Service of Ukraine in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

In related news, Russian authorities have established at least 29 prisons where Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war face systematic torture.
