For the first time in history, three Ukrainian tennis players have advanced to the second round of the Olympic singles tournament.

Ukrainian tennis player Daiana Yastremska had a successful start at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In the first round of the individual tournament, the 24-year-old Odesa native defeated Laura Pigossi of Brazil. The intense three-set match lasted 2 hours and ended with a determined victory for Yastremska – 3:6, 7:5, 6:0.

This is Yastremska’s second Olympic appearance. At the 2020 Tokyo Games, she was eliminated in the first round.

In the Round of 16, Yastremska will face Colombian Camila Osorio, who won her opening match against Latvian Elena Ostapenko (6:4, 6:3).

Yastremska is the third Ukrainian tennis player to reach the second round of the 2024 Olympics. Earlier, Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostiuk won their opening matches in Paris.

Another Ukrainian tennis player, Anhelina Kalinina, withdrew from the 2024 Olympics due to illness.

The previous national record was set at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when Mariia Koryttsevaa and Alona Bondarenko won their opening matches.

The 2024 Summer Olympics, Paris 2024, is taking place from July 26 to August 11, 2024, in France.
