“Time to Make a Deal”: Trump Pushes Russia for Peace

Former US President Donald Trump used his Truth Social platform on January 22 to urge Russia to end its war in Ukraine, warning of significant economic consequences if no resolution is reached. He proposed imposing broad sanctions and tariffs on all Russian exports to the United States and allied nations if Russia persists in its aggression.

“It’s time to make a deal. No more lives must be lost,” Trump wrote, calling for an immediate agreement to halt the war. He warned, “If we don’t make a deal soon, I will have no choice but to impose high taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on everything Russia sells to the US and other participating countries.”

Trump described Russia's economy as "collapsing" and presented his call for negotiations as a chance for Vladimir Putin to mitigate further damage. “I’m going to do Russia, whose economy is failing, and President Putin a very big favor. Settle now and stop this ridiculous war! It’s only going to get worse,” he stated.

Earlier on January 20, President Donald Trump stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy seeks peace, adding, “But it takes two to tango. We’ll see what happens.”

On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated Trump on his inauguration as the 47th President of the United States. Zelenskyy also highlighted that Trump’s peace-through-strength policy offers an opportunity to achieve a long-term and just peace, which remains Ukraine’s top priority.
