Trump Administration Drafts Plan for Possible Russia Sanctions Relief, Reuters Reports

The United States is considering potential adjustments to its sanctions policy toward Russia as part of broader diplomatic efforts, Reuters reports on March 3.
According to Reuters, sources familiar with the matter indicate that the White House has directed the State and Treasury Departments to draft a proposal outlining possible sanctions relief. This initiative aligned with President Donald Trump’s ongoing efforts to improve relations with Moscow and address Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine.
Officials are reportedly preparing a list of select entities and individuals, including some Russian business figures, who could be subject to eased restrictions. Such “options papers” are a standard part of policy discussions on sanctions but reflect the administration’s openness to exploring new diplomatic avenues with Russia.
It remains unclear what specific concessions Washington might seek in return for any sanctions relief. The discussions are still in the preliminary stages, and no final decisions have been made.
Previously, it was reported the United States is open to resuming negotiations on natural resources with Ukraine, but only if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expresses regret.
