Trump Claims Putin Will End Ukraine War If Oil Falls $10 More Per Barrel

US President Donald Trump claimed that Russian leader Vladimir Putin would have no choice but to end the war in Ukraine if global oil prices dropped by $10 per barrel, according to the interview with CNBC aired on August 5.
“Putin will stop killing people if we bring the oil price down another $10 a barrel. He won’t have a choice, because his economy is terrible,” Trump said during the interview.
Trump’s statement reflects his longstanding view that Russia’s wartime capacity is heavily dependent on hydrocarbon revenues. The remark also comes amid a broader discussion about secondary sanctions against countries purchasing Russian oil, as well as the ongoing efforts by the G7 and EU to enforce the $60-per-barrel price cap on Russian crude.

The average price of Russia’s Urals crude oil fell to $55 per barrel in July 2025, according to data cited by Bloomberg, undercutting the G7 cap and squeezing Moscow’s export revenue.
This is not the first time Trump has linked oil market dynamics to Russia’s war policy. In a May 2024 rally, he stated that “energy dominance” could be used as a weapon against Putin, adding, “When oil is cheap, his war gets weaker.”
Earlier, Ukraine’s presidential office and others insisted that secondary sanctions on countries purchasing Russian oil—potentially including 100 % or even 500 % tariffs—could significantly damage Russia’s war budget and compel compliance with cease‑fire demands.
