Trump Says He Rejected Orbán’s Request for Exemption From US Sanctions on Russian Oil

On October 31, US President Donald Trump said he refused to grant Hungary an exemption from American sanctions on Russian oil despite a personal request from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Speaking to reporters, Trump confirmed that Orbán had appealed for an exception, citing Hungary’s reliance on Russian crude delivered through pipelines.
“He asked for an exemption, but we didn’t grant it—not a single one. He’s my friend, yes, but he asked for an exemption,” Trump said.
According to Reuters, Orbán had hoped to persuade Trump to make an exception for Hungary due to the country’s high dependence on pipeline energy supplies.

The Hungarian leader earlier announced plans to discuss the issue during a meeting with Trump scheduled for November 7, where he also intended to seek a broader economic agreement with the United States.
“Hungary is a country without access to the sea. We depend on the routes that bring energy to Hungary, which are mainly pipelines. We need to make Americans understand this specific situation if we want them to allow exceptions from US sanctions against Russia,” Orbán said earlier this week.
Previously, it was reported that Budapest is actively seeking to partner with the Czechia and Slovakia to establish Ukraine-skeptic alliance within the European Union, a move explicitly aimed at coordinating opposition to supporting Ukraine.
