Trump Weighs Sweeping Sanctions on Russia, Urges Immediate Peace Talks With Ukraine

U.S. President Donald Trump is considering imposing sweeping sanctions on Russia, including banking restrictions and new tariffs, until a ceasefire and peace agreement with Ukraine are reached, the American leader announced on March 7.

“To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it’s too late. Thank you!!!” Trump wrote.

Before that, he had signaled his intent to take action against Moscow, stating, “Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now,” and adding that he is “strongly considering” tougher sanctions.

Ealrier, reports emerged that the United States is prepared to intensify sanctions on Russian energy if it helps lead to a ceasefire in Ukraine, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said.

Speaking at the Economic Club of New York, Bessent emphasized that sanctions would be used decisively under President Donald Trump’s direction.

“Sanctions on Russia will be applied explicitly and aggressively for immediate maximum impact,” Bessent stated.
