Ukraine and Russia Hold First Direct Talks in Three Years in Türkiye

Direct talks between Russia and Ukraine have begun in Istanbul, the BBC reported on May 16, citing a Turkish television broadcast.
This marks the first direct negotiations with Russian officials since 2022, with Turkish representatives in attendance.
Prior to the meeting, the head of the Russian delegation, Vladimir Medinsky, reportedly met with a US representative, likely Michael Anton, Director of Policy Planning. The content of their conversation has not been disclosed.
Putin, who had proposed holding direct talks in Istanbul, ultimately did not attend. Instead, he sent a delegation led by Medinsky.
During a press conference in Ankara on May 15, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted the low level of the Russian delegation but stressed that Ukraine participates “out of respect for Presidents Trump and Erdoğan.”
