Ukraine has already deployed laser weaponry against Russian targets, Colonel Vadym Sukharevskyi, commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, revealed in an interview with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty on February 3.

The commander had first stated in December 2024 that Ukraine was among a handful of countries capable of developing and fielding laser-based weapons. According to Sukharevskyi, Ukraine’s laser system, known as Tryzub, is powerful enough to take down aircraft flying at altitudes of over 2 kilometers.

“…laser technology is already striking certain objects at a certain height,” Sukharevskyi said when asked about the Ukrainian laser system and its deployment.

When asked about the progress of these advanced technologies, Sukharevskyi said Ukraine’s military research and development involves “a number of areas.”

The new system was developed in response to Russia’s widespread use of drones and aerial threats, particularly Shahed-type attack drones. According to Sukharevskyi, the Tryzub laser is part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to neutralize Russian airpower and counter the threat posed by attack and scout drones.

Earlier, Ukrainian forces struck a reinforced Russian bunker in the occupied Kherson region using a US-supplied M712 Copperhead laser-guided artillery shell.
