Ukraine has intensified efforts to fortify its borders, particularly with Belarus, as part of the ‘Safe Border’ initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s northern defenses.

According to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGS), these measures include constructing fortifications and expanding surveillance capabilities.

Speaking on the national telethon on January 8, SBGS spokesperson Andrii Demchenko emphasized the critical importance of border security, highlighting its role in preventing illegal activities, ensuring the safety of border regions, and maintaining openness for legitimate cross-border movement.

Demchenko noted that the border with Belarus is considered a potential threat. As part of the ongoing security upgrades, this sector is being equipped with fortifications, strongpoints, fire positions, trenches, and barriers. These enhancements aim to provide Ukrainian forces with the tools needed to respond effectively to any emerging threats.

“In addition to physical fortifications, efforts include expanding video surveillance systems and installing cameras to monitor each section of the border. This will enable rapid responses to any attempted breaches,” Demchenko explained.

The measures align with Ukraine’s broader resilience plan, as outlined by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The strategy integrates various components of border management, combining security measures with efficient systems to support cross-border movement.

The ‘Safe Border’ initiative also extends to Ukraine’s other borders, including the 1,400 km shared with the European Union and the 1,200 km border with Moldova. Each section is being reinforced based on its unique requirements.

Earlier, Poland announced plans to build a road to its border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region to enable rapid military deployment if necessary. Deputy Interior Minister Maciej Duszczyk stated that construction would begin soon and finish by 2025, aligning with Poland’s broader defense efforts.
