Ukraine Establishes First Reintegration Center for Former POWs
Ukraine has officially opened its first Reintegration Center dedicated to military personnel recently released from Russian captivity, marking a significant step forward in support for returning servicemembers. According to Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, the facility, which operates in central Ukraine, is equipped to provide comprehensive care, including medical, psychological, and rehabilitation services.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Umerov outlined that this specialized center will serve as a single-point resource for reintegration assistance. Services at the center extend beyond healthcare, encompassing guidance on official documentation recovery and other administrative processes to facilitate the reintegration of veterans into civilian life.
Currently, the facility is designed to accommodate up to 100 individuals, with plans to expand capacity to over 200 as demand increases, primarily through the addition of rehabilitation beds. The center’s creation follows an order from the Ministry of Defense, issued in response to a broader governmental mandate aimed at supporting military and civilian personnel who have endured captivity.
The Ministry of Defense has reported initial feedback from service members and healthcare personnel, whose suggestions are under consideration by the Defense Health Department to enhance the center’s offerings.
Additionally, family members of former POWs will receive supportive resources to help address the challenges they may face, underscoring a commitment to minimize the impact of captivity on both veterans and their loved ones.
This newly inaugurated Reintegration Center, established in coordination with the President’s Office and other government agencies, is expected to become a cornerstone of Ukraine’s support system for former POWs, providing essential services under one roof and helping them transition back to daily life.
