Ukraine is Already Striking Russian Territory With American Weapons After US Recent Approval, AP Reports
In recent days, Ukraine has already used American weapons for strikes on the territory of Russia, the Associated Press agency reported on June 5 referring to a US senator and an official of one of the Western countries.
These strikes followed US President Joe Biden’s permission for Ukraine to utilize American weaponry for striking targets in Russia with restrictions—the weapons can be used in the border region with Kharkiv, where Russia conducted a new offensive at the beginning of May.
The anonymous officials emphasized that despite the recent strikes, the US policy still prohibits using the American-supplied ATACMS, long-range missiles.
The strikes on Russian territories are allowed to be used for “counterfire purposes in the Kharkiv region so Ukraine can hit back against Russian forces that are attacking them or preparing to attack them,” stated one of the officials.
In a May 31 interview with The Guardian, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the United States once again, urging them to authorize the use of long-range missiles against targets deep within Russian territory.
Zelenskyy suggests that even using the British-made Storm Shadow missiles will not be possible unless the White House gives the green light first.
