Ukraine Requests Mexico to Arrest Putin if He Attends Sheinbaum’s Presidential Inauguration
Ukraine has requested Mexico to arrest Russian leader Vladimir Putin if he attends the inauguration of President Claudia Sheinbaum in October.
This was stated in a release from the Ukrainian Embassy in Mexico.
On March 17, 2023, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Putin, accusing him of the illegal deportation of hundreds of children from Ukraine. Now, the Russian leader can be detained in any country that has ratified the Rome Statute.
Mexico is a member of the ICC and ratified the Rome Statute on October 28, 2005.
The Ukrainian embassy acknowledged that Mexico had invited representatives from all countries with which it maintains diplomatic relations to the inauguration and thanked for the invitation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“We also hope that the Mexican government recognizes that Vladimir Putin is a war criminal with an arrest warrant for the abduction and forcible transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia, issued by the International Criminal Court, which Mexico acknowledges. We hope that the Mexican government will, in any case, execute the international arrest warrant by handing over the aforementioned individual to the UN judicial body in The Hague,” the statement said.
Media reports indicated Mexico invited Putin to the inauguration of the new president, Claudia Sheinbaum, on October 1, 2024.
