Ukraine Tests American Interceptor Drone Hitchhiker
Ukraine has successfully tested the Hitchhiker, a cutting-edge drone interceptor developed by the American companies IronNet and Asterion Systems.
According to Newsweek, the Hitchhiker is specifically designed to counter loitering munitions such as Iranian-made Shahed drones.
IronNet, specializing in AI-powered cybersecurity, and Asterion Systems, a leader in counter-drone technology, joined forces to develop the Hitchhiker. The partnership combines IronNet’s IronDome, a cyber threat detection system, with Asterion’s expertise in neutralizing airborne threats. This synergy aims to address the Pentagon’s growing demand for integrated defense solutions.
Hitchhiker is a multipurpose interceptor capable of reaching speeds of up to 450 km/h with a range of 200 kilometers. The system integrates advanced sensors for situational awareness and secure networked environments, allowing early detection of hostile drones. It can be launched from stationary or mobile platforms, enhancing its operational flexibility.
Rear Admiral Mike Hewitt, director at IronNet, described the Hitchhiker as a “game-changer” for Ukraine’s battlefield capabilities. The drone’s cost-effective operation offers a significant advantage over traditional air defense systems, such as the expensive Patriot missiles.
The interceptor has already been deployed on the front lines in Ukraine, receiving positive feedback from operators.
Plans for a jet-powered version of the Hitchhiker are underway, which could further enhance its ability to intercept high-speed drones.
