Ukraine Unveils Combat-Ready Alternative to Mavic Drone For Its Military
The newly developed and approved Ukrainian Shmavik drone, despite its ironic name, is far from a civilian Mavic-like device. Recently certified by Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense, the drone is set to be integrated into the country’s Armed Forces.
According to Defense Express, The Shmavik is positioned as a tactical reconnaissance drone, designed for operational missions on the front lines, as opposed to the civilian-oriented Mavic, which is primarily used for aerial photography and video recording.
The Shmavik is the first of its kind to receive official certification, with plans for additional military-grade drones in development. These drones will undergo further testing to determine the best models for mass production and integration into Ukraine’s defense forces.
The Mavic, produced by DJI, is known for its portability, advanced cameras, and consumer-level features such as obstacle avoidance and a Wi-Fi-based communication system. However, its reliance on vulnerable communication channels and unprotected navigation systems make it unsuitable for military operations.
In contrast, the Shmavik is built for battlefield conditions. It has an operational range of up to 15 kilometers, flight endurance of up to 60 minutes, and is equipped with a robust navigation system resistant to jamming.
The drone’s payload includes a high-performance camera, specifically designed for military reconnaissance rather than cinematic purposes. Its software, developed domestically, meets military-grade standards and can be expanded to include features such as automated target recognition and integration with automated command and control systems.
At a recent demonstration, the Ukrainian Ministry of Strategic Industries showcased several drone models developed by local companies, aimed at fulfilling the growing demand for reliable, combat-ready UAVs.
