Olha Kharlan Wins Ukraine’s First Gold in Women’s Sabre Fencing
Ukraine’s women’s saber fencing team won the nation’s first gold medal at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
Olha Kharlan led the team to victory with a strong performance, defeating South Korea 45-32 in the final round. Olympic champions Olha Kharlan, Alina Komaschuk, Olena Kravatska, and Yuliya Bakastova secured Ukraine’s third overall medal at the Games.
Ukraine’s Olympic team victory elevated Kharlan to the status of the country’s most decorated Olympian, making it her sixth Olympic medal.
“Ukrainian gold at the Olympics in Paris! Thank you for the result, for the spirit, for the Ukrainians winning! We cheer for our people and support the whole country. Ukraine is also at the Olympic Games, and at such a time it knows how to inspire,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy celebrated in his statement.
Ukraine has so far earned three medals at the Paris Olympics. Shooter Serhiy Kulish won silver in the 50-meter rifle three-position event.
