Ukraine has condemned the Georgian government for using force to disperse peaceful protests in Tbilisi and expressed disappointment over Georgia’s decision to suspend talks on European Union membership until 2028, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry stated on November 29.

“Ukraine strongly condemns the use of force against peaceful demonstrators in Tbilisi. We urge the Georgian authorities to respect the citizens’ right to peaceful protest and refrain from violence and provocations,” the ministry said.

Ukrainian MFA expressed deep disappointment with Tbilisi’s decision to halt EU membership negotiations until 2028.

“This decision, along with the violent suppression of peaceful protests, is a clear sign of the rollback of democratic processes in favor of Moscow’s interests,” the ministry noted.

The MFA pointed out that the Georgian leadership has already received public praise from the Kremlin for its actions, which contradict the European aspirations of its people.

Ukraine called on Georgia to honor the will of its citizens, who overwhelmingly favor closer integration with Europe, and to resume the necessary reforms for EU membership.

Since regaining independence, Georgia has consistently pursued closer ties with Europe, despite a history of political and cultural influence from Moscow.

However, ongoing Russian attempts to deter its European aspirations remain evident, as seen in the recent Georgian parliamentary elections on October 26, where the Moscow-aligned Georgian Dream party secured nearly 54% of the vote.
