Yaroslava Mahuchikh from Ukraine won the gold medal at the European Athletics Championships in Rome for the second time in a row in the women’s high jump on Sunday, June 9.

“I came to Rome to defend my title and to become the double European champion and that is what I managed tonight,” said Mahuchikh.

Mahuchikh started with a height of 1.90m, then took 1.95m, 1.97m, 1.99m, and on the second attempt took 2.01m. She surpassed the Serbian Angelina Topić (1.97m) in the fight for victory, she won the silver medal.

This is Yaroslava’s second triumph at the continental championships, having previously secured victory at the European Athletics Championships in 2022.

“And it is 2.01 again — it is a good result and it shows that I can jump higher and higher. My goal is fulfilled and thanks god I did not feel the pain in my hamstring,” Yaroslava added.

The bronze was also won by a Ukrainian athlete, Iryna Herashchenko, with a height of 1.95m. It took Iryna three attempts to clear the height of 1.97m.
