On the morning of June 7, Ukrainian forces shot down a Russian Su-35 multirole fighter jet over Russia’s Kursk region, according to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

In a statement published on Telegram, the Air Force confirmed the downing occurred as part of a successful operation conducted along the Kursk axis. No further operational details have been disclosed.

The Su-35 is Russia’s most advanced non-stealth fighter jet, designed as a deep upgrade of the Soviet Su-27. Built for air superiority and precision strikes, it combines high speed, powerful sensors, and extreme maneuverability thanks to thrust-vectoring engines.

Equipped with the Irbis-E radar, the Su-35 can detect targets up to 400 km away, track 30 at once, and engage up to 8 simultaneously. It reaches speeds of 2,500 km/h and carries a wide range of missiles and guided bombs across 12 hardpoints.

Despite its capabilities, the Su-35 has suffered losses in Ukraine, where several have been shot down by modern Western air defenses. Each jet is estimated to cost between $98 and $104 million, making it one of the most expensive aircraft in Russia’s fleet.

Earlier, on June 1, Ukraine’s Security Service launched Operation “Spiderweb,” a coordinated drone campaign that targeted four Russian airfields—Belaya, Dyagilevo, Olenya, and Ivanovo. Ukriane claims the operation damaged or destroyed 41 Russian military aircraft.
