On Sunday, September 15, Ukrainian special forces from the “Khimik” unit of the Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) carried out an operation against a Russian military base near Aleppo, Syria. This base was reportedly involved in the production and testing of strike drones, as well as the manufacturing of camouflaged improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

According to a Kyiv Post source within military intelligence, the attack occurred on the southeastern outskirts of Aleppo. The Kyiv Post has obtained footage from the operation, which shows Ukrainian military insignia near the targeted Russian facility. Shortly after the initial strike, a significant explosion and subsequent detonation of munitions were observed at the site.

Since Russia’s intervention in the Syrian Civil War in 2015, the country has established a substantial military presence in the region. This presence has been partly redirected to support Russia’s actions in Ukraine, potentially increasing the vulnerability of Russian forces in Syria to Ukrainian operations. Additionally, Russia has used its Syrian bases to recruit mercenaries for the war in Ukraine.

In May 2023, HUR Chief Kyrylo Budanov stated that Ukrainian forces would target Russian war criminals wherever they may be. Ukrainian special forces have extended their operations beyond Syria to locations such as Sudan, where they continue to pursue pro-Kremlin Wagner Group mercenaries.
