Ukrainian energy state energy company Ukrenergo specialists have successfully restored the high-voltage line supplying power to the temporarily Russian-occupied Ukrainian Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), Ukrenergo wrote in a Telegram post on November 19.

Since November 14, following another Russian missile strike, the ZNPP had been operating on a single power line, a clear violation of international nuclear safety standards. This line, which had previously been de-energized for nearly six months due to repeated Russian shelling, had only been operational for less than a week before the latest damage occurred, according to Ukrenergo.

Russian attacks regularly damage wires, insulation, and lightning protection cables, causing outages and short circuits.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Ukrainian energy workers have been forced to restore power to the Zaporizhzhia plant over 40 times, with the plant losing full power from the Ukrainian grid on 10 occasions, Ukrenergo wrote.

Previously, Ukrainian Energoatom stated the ZNPP has been running on emergency diesel generators for a second day after losing all external power, warning the situation poses risks beyond Ukraine.

The operator added that the blackout—its tenth since Russia seized the site in 2022—was caused by actions of occupying forces and that the line remains intact on Ukraine-controlled territory, but the station “is deliberately not being reconnected” by Russian forces.
