US Unveils $125 Million Military Aid Package for Ukraine Ahead of Independence Day
The US Department of Defense has announced a new military assistance package for Ukraine, marking the sixty-fourth tranche of support provided by the Biden administration since August 2021. The package is valued at approximately $125 million and includes a range of military equipment.
According to the Pentagon’s press release, the assistance is aimed at addressing critical security and defense needs of Ukraine. The package includes:
- Equipment and munitions for countering unmanned aerial systems (c-UAS);
- Ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS);
- Artillery ammunition in 155mm and 105mm calibers;
- Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wire-guided (TOW) missiles;
- Javelin and AT-4 anti-tank systems;
- High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV);
- Small arms ammunition;
- Medical equipment;
- Demolition equipment and munitions;
- Spare parts, ancillary equipment, services, training, and transportation.
President Joe Biden confirmed the new package of assistance during a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Biden emphasized that support for Ukraine remains a priority for the US and its international coalition.
Additionally, on Friday, the US imposed new sanctions on nearly 400 individuals and entities linked to Russia’s invasion. Biden also highlighted recent significant measures taken by the US and its allies to support Ukraine, including the provision of F-16 fighter jets and enhanced air defense systems.
In July, Biden initiated the formation of the Ukrainian Pact, aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities. The US, along with G7 countries, has also taken steps to address the damage caused by the Russian invasion, including $50 billion in loans backed by frozen Russian assets.
