Vice President JD Vance stated that resuming testing of the US nuclear arsenal is “an important part of American national security” following President Donald Trump’s order to begin testing after a 33-year moratorium, according to the Reuters on October 30.

Speaking outside the White House, Vance said: “We have a big arsenal. Obviously, the Russians have a large nuclear arsenal. The Chinese have a large nuclear arsenal. Sometimes you’ve got to test it to make sure that it’s functioning and working properly.”

He added: “To be clear, we know that it does work properly, but you got to keep on top of it over time, and the president just wants to make sure that we do that.”

Vance presented the initiative not as a reaction to an imminent failure of the weapons stockpile, but as part of a broader regime of maintenance and verification: “It’s an important part of American national security to make sure that this nuclear arsenal we have actually functions properly,” he told reporters.

The decision comes amid concerns from arms-control experts that renewed US testing could provoke parallel moves by other nuclear-armed states.

Earlier, it was reported that the President of the United States ordered the Pentagon to immediately resume US nuclear weapons testing in response to recent Russian strategic weapons tests, saying the United States has more nuclear weapons than any other country and must act “on equal basis.”
