Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a landmark address to the British Cabinet, marking the first visit by a foreign leader to Downing Street since 1997.

Zelenskyy's address garnered a standing ovation from the Cabinet, underscoring their unwavering support for Ukraine.

“This is a very, very important meeting for us and you’re very welcome here,” Starmer said. “It is a real pleasure and a privilege to be able to welcome you to Downing Street this morning. This is a real piece of history.”

Starmer highlighted that Zelenskyy’s status as the first foreign leader of the 21st century to address the British Cabinet in person reflects “the esteem you’re held in this country and around the world”.

During the meeting, Zelenskyy emphasized the critical importance of enhancing Ukraine’s “long-range capability” and specifically called for the lifting of restrictions on Western weapons.

If restrictions on Western weapons are lifted, it would significantly bolster Kyiv’s defenses and secure its frontline positions, he asserted. “We have the capacity to neutralize areas in Russia where weapons are concentrated.”

Zelenskyy urged Starmer to “demonstrate leadership” on this matter, stressing its pivotal role in Ukraine’s defense against Moscow.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in the UK on July 18 to participate in the summit of the European Political Community and attend bilateral meetings and sign new security agreements with partners.
