Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed in a February 12 interview with The Guardian that he has been the target of multiple assassination attempts. One of these attempts, he disclosed, resulted in casualties within the Presidential Office.

Recalling the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Zelenskyy revealed that Russian forces proposed a so-called “peace deal” that was even harsher than the Minsk agreements and would have required Ukraine to betray its national interests.

Additionally, the President noted that “messengers”, including members of Ukraine’s parliament, were sent to pressure him, insisting that Ukraine’s defeat was inevitable and urging him to flee Kyiv. According to Zelenskyy, even leaders of various countries advised him to leave Ukraine.

“There was pressure from different sides. There were people who wanted to kill [me], there were gunshots. Some people inside our office lost their lives. Others defended us… There was an airborne assault,” Zelenskyy said.

Back in May 2022, Zelenskyy stated that there had been ten assassination attempts against him. By March 2024, he mentioned that the number had exceeded ten: “They say it’s more than ten. But that’s according to officials, intelligence officers, and security services—I don’t keep track of the exact number, to be honest.”

In an interview on February 9, Zelenskyy warned that suspending martial law to hold elections before the war ends could compromise the country’s military capabilities, a scenario that Russia would seek to exploit.
