How to Be a Part of the International Legion of Ukraine

For many around the world, the Ukrainian International Legion stands as an opportunity to directly address one of the biggest injustices in the world. Amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine, volunteers from around the world are answering President Volodymyr Zenenskyy’s call for international volunteers to aid in the country’s defense.

The need for experienced and motivated servicemen in the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is paramount. The weaponry provided by NATO allies is technologically superior and gives Ukraine an edge, even if the enemy has more manpower. Ukraine’s soldiers are also highly motivated due to the defensive nature of the war. Right now Ukraine is the only thing standing in the way of a direct conflict between Russia and the West.

What is the International Legion of Ukraine?

Much like the French Foreign Legion, Ukraine’s International Legion has welcomed volunteers from over 55 countries. Their structure consists of various battalions, regiments, and tactical groups. The exact number of foreign fighters in Ukraine is confidential.

Foreign volunteers have fought alongside the Ukrainian Army since 2014, when Russia invaded Crimea and eastern Ukraine. Then, foreign volunteers fought Russia on the side of various Ukrainian volunteer battalions, until Ukraine’s parliament passed a bill allowing foreigners to join the military.

On February 27th, 2022, three days into Russia’s full-scale invasion, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ordered the formation of the International Legion to aid in Ukraine’s defense.

There are a variety of roles in the International Legion, and all kinds of skill sets are welcome. Foreign fighters have participated in major campaigns, fighting in the Kyiv Region, Zaporizhzhia campaign, Kharkiv offensive, Bakhmut, Kupyansk, and Chasiv Yar—just to name a few.

How to join the International Legion of Ukraine: instructions

The International Legion includes a diverse mix of volunteers from around the globe. They join to support Ukraine's defense and are selected based on their motivation, communication skills, physical fitness, and adaptability, regardless of their background.

There is a streamlined process for applying to the International Legion, forms are filled out online and recruiters will be in touch remotely. There are no recruitment centers for foreigners abroad or in Ukraine. People are advised to not travel to Ukraine in an attempt to join the Armed Forces, recruitment is only available online. People should apply from the comfort of their own homes.

Ukrainian law allows the international legion to recruit fighters from the age of 18-60, applicants must not have a criminal record or chronic disease, be physically sound, and have the ability to enter Ukraine from their country.

There is a pathway to Ukrainian citizenship for members of the International Legion, current legislation requires soldiers to serve until the end of the war to receive it—though there are initiatives to streamline that process. A contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine will permit soldiers to stay in the country long term.

Applicants are not considered mercenaries by joining the International Legion, as they sign military contracts and become full-fledged members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Applicants are not strictly restricted to the Legion and can be placed in different teams, squads, companies, or battalions with international soldiers. Ukrainian law does not permit foreigners to assume the role of an officer in the armed forces.

Understanding the Risks

Joining the International Legion requires a significant personal commitment and financial investment. This is not a vacation, travel expenses are not covered and many arrangements should be made at the applicant's expense. Applicants are encouraged to consult local authorities and consider the laws in their country on joining a foreign military before applying.

Joining is not without significant risk to one’s life. Volunteers must confront the realities of war, including the possibility of injury or death. The war in Ukraine is fierce, with a high likelihood of encountering intense combat situations. Those with previous combat experience may not have been prepared for the style of warfare in Ukraine. Those who choose to volunteer should understand the risks to themselves and their comrades.

Injured soldiers receive free medical treatment and special disability compensation. Families of fallen soldiers are entitled to a 15 million UAH compensation over $400,000. To receive this, the immediate family must open bank accounts and submit the necessary documents in Ukraine. Disabled soldiers receive tiered payouts based on the severity of their injuries.

Legion support organizations also exist, consisting of NGOs, veteran support groups, and partners who help with resources and funds that support active duty Legionnaires. This includes all kinds of medical and material support.
