Ukraine may have adapted its Bars long-range jet-powered strike drone into an air-defense interceptor, with the system reportedly showing the highest effectiveness among Ukrainian interceptor drones currently used against Russian aerial targets.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted the Bars system during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Kyiv on October 4.

“Second—interceptor drones. Bars have shown positive results. They currently have the highest percentage. Others are also catching up. God willing, there will be this kind of competition in the good sense of the word,” Zelenskyy said.

It remains unclear whether Zelenskyy was referring to a modified version of the existing Bars strike drone or a separate jet-powered interceptor carrying the same name.

Ukraine and Germany already have an agreement covering joint production of Bars drones, while Ukrainian jet-powered platforms originally designed for deep-strike missions have also been adapted for interception tasks.

Zelenskyy said the Bars interceptor currently has an interception effectiveness of around 30%. He also said Ukraine is expected to receive 2,000 Bars systems produced in cooperation with Germany, with funding already provided by the German side.

According to Zelenskyy, Ukrainian forces currently destroy around 50% to 55% of Russian jet-powered drones, sometimes reaching 60%, while conventional Shahed-type drones are intercepted at a rate of around 85% to 92%, depending on the composition of each attack.

Production of jet-powered interceptors remains constrained by engine availability and financing. Zelenskyy previously said Ukraine imports large numbers of engines while also producing some domestically, though local output remains insufficient.

The Bars platform has been under development since 2023 and has undergone more than 40 engineering upgrades.

Depending on configuration, different versions can reportedly reach ranges of up to 1,000 kilometers, carry payloads of up to 60 kilograms, and exceed speeds of 700 kilometers per hour.

Bars was developed as a modular platform with DeepStrike, MiddleStrike, and FrontStrike configurations, allowing fuel capacity and payload to be adjusted for different missions.

The platform also incorporates artificial intelligence technologies, including machine vision in its targeting systems. Neither the Ukrainian government nor the manufacturer has publicly confirmed that the Bars interceptor identified by Zelenskyy is directly derived from the long-range strike version.

Earlier, Ukraine deployed more than 12 automated .50-caliber gun turrets in Kyiv to counter Russian jet-powered drones, with another eight systems set to be installed across the Kyiv region.
