Ukrainian Border Guards Destroy Russian BM-21 Grad and Multiple Military Targets With Drones, Video

Ukrainian border guard drone operators destroyed a Russian BM-21 Grad multiple launch rocket system, armored and transport vehicles, ammunition depots, and other military assets in the Northern Slobozhanshchyna sector, Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service reported on September 11.

According to the agency, operators from the Prime unmanned systems unit targeted a range of Russian positions and equipment during recent operations in the area.
Among the assets destroyed was a BM-21 Grad multiple launch rocket system, along with a mortar, an armored combat vehicle, a truck, several passenger vehicles, a motorcycle, and a ground robotic system.
The Ukrainian drone operators also struck Russian ammunition and fuel and lubricant storage facilities, as well as communications equipment.
The strikes additionally targeted shelters used by Russian personnel, further disrupting Russian positions in the sector, according to the State Border Guard Service.
The BM-21 Grad (“Hail”) is a Soviet-designed multiple launch rocket system mounted on a Ural-4320 truck chassis. Equipped with 40 tubes for 122 mm rockets, it can fire a complete salvo in about 20 seconds, covering an area of up to 14.5 hectares. The system has a maximum firing range of roughly 40 kilometers and can be reloaded in around seven minutes, allowing crews to strike and relocate relatively quickly.
First introduced into service in 1963, the Grad continues to play a significant role in Russia’s artillery forces. Its relatively old design and battlefield visibility, however, have made the system increasingly vulnerable to Ukrainian FPV drones, which are used to locate and strike mobile launchers.
The operation comes amid broader Ukrainian strikes targeting Russia’s drone and military infrastructure. On September 9 and overnight into September 10, Ukraine’s Defense Forces hit several Russian UAV command posts, three radar systems, an ammunition storage facility, and other military targets, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The General Staff said one of the targets was a facility in temporarily occupied Donetsk used to store, prepare, and launch Geran and Gerbera attack drones.
