Warehouse Holding Vivat and Readeat Books Burns Down During Russian Attack Near Kyiv

A warehouse storing thousands of books from major Ukrainian publishers and retailers burned down in Sviatopetrivske, Kyiv region, as an aftermath of Russian attack, according to Ukrainian publisher Vivat.

The warehouse was located at a Nova Poshta facility in Sviatopetrivske and contained books belonging to Vivat as well as products stored by its partners, including the Readeat and Book.ua bookstores.
Firefighters were still working to extinguish the blaze, while the full extent of the losses remained under assessment.
Despite the destruction of the warehouse, Vivat said it would continue operating. Its physical bookstores remain open, while electronic and audiobooks are still available to readers.
Readeat and Book.ua bookstores, whose books were also stored at the facility, temporarily suspended online order shipments as it assesses the consequences of the attack and determines how to resume deliveries.
The companies’ physical bookstores remain open despite the disruption to online shipments.
The latest destruction comes amid a series of Russian attacks that have repeatedly damaged Ukraine’s book and publishing infrastructure. Overnight on August 16, Russian forces carried out a coordinated missile and drone assault that struck a book market in Kyiv and industrial facilities in Kryvyi Rih. Two people were killed and at least 16 others were injured across the two cities.
Overall, Russian strikes destroyed or damaged at least 9.65 million books in Ukraine between May and August 2026.
By August 3, Ukrainian publishers had produced 13.09 million books in 2026, meaning the number of books destroyed or damaged over the summer was equivalent to roughly 74% of the country’s total output for the year to date.
