Patriot interceptor missiles expended during US and allied air defense operations in the Middle East could have supported Ukraine’s air defenses for several years, according to Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat.

According to RBC-Ukraine on October 26, Ihnat made the assessment during the outlet’s “TSE BAZA” podcast, highlighting differences in how Ukrainian forces and other Patriot operators use the American-made air defense systems.

Ihnat explained that Ukrainian crews have developed tactics to conserve expensive interceptors while maintaining their effectiveness against Russian missiles and aircraft.

One major difference involves the number of missiles launched against individual targets. Ukrainian operators have learned to engage certain threats with a single interceptor, while air defense crews in the Middle East have reportedly fired as many as eight missiles at one target.

Patriot systems can operate in automatic, semi-automatic, and manual modes. According to Ihnat, automatic operation can result in multiple interceptors being launched against a single threat, particularly when crews lack extensive combat experience.

He argued that the volume of Patriot missiles expended in the Middle East could have sustained Ukrainian Patriot operations for several years, contributing to concerns over interceptor availability.

Ukraine has also adapted how Patriot batteries are deployed. Rather than keeping the systems in fixed defensive positions near military installations, Ukrainian forces have used mobile tactics to intercept Russian aircraft before relocating.

Ihnat cited a May 2023 operation in Russia’s Bryansk region, when Ukrainian Patriot crews reportedly shot down five Russian aircraft—including two fighter jets and three helicopters—in just five minutes. The operation demonstrated Ukraine’s ability to use Patriot systems for mobile air defense ambushes rather than relying exclusively on fixed defensive positions.

The comments come amid growing concerns over Ukraine’s limited access to Patriot interceptors as Russia continues launching ballistic missile attacks against Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously stated that Ukraine receives approximately 12 Patriot interceptors per month, roughly four times fewer than during former US President Joe Biden’s administration. Zelenskyy also said that some interceptor shipments already financed by Ukraine’s international partners have yet to receive authorization from Washington.
