The financial contribution, initially revealed by investigative news outlet ProPublica, came from Umar Kremlev, a boxing executive who maintains close ties to the Russian state and has received state honors from Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, President Trump—who did not attend the 50-person private Bahamian island event—defended the contribution as a “common” gesture between friends, according to The Washington Post.

“It’s totally allowed, but as I understand it, he paid him back,” Trump said. “He didn’t want to have that.”
The bride, Bettina Trump, confirmed the financial gift but denied any political or sinister motives, stating that friendship does not require an agenda. According to previous reports, Kremlev met Trump Jr. several years ago and speaks limited English.
