Poland Thwarts Russian Plot to Assassinate US-Ukrainian Citizen

Polish special services have thwarted an assassination attempt targeting a dual citizen of the United States and Ukraine in Warsaw, which was planned by a Russian national, according to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk as reported by EuroNews.
The suspect, a Russian citizen recruited by Russian intelligence agencies, was detained on August 7, 2026. Tusk stated that joint efforts by the Internal Security Agency (ABW) and local police prevented the attack at the last moment.

This incident represents the first recorded case of a plot ordered by Russia to kill a US citizen on the territory of a NATO member nation.
Although the specific identity of the intended victim has not been disclosed, Tusk clarified that the target was selected because the individual posed a threat to the Putin regime.
The event follows a separate operation where Sweden’s State Security Service disrupted Russian activities aimed at influencing key decision-making within the country and undermining both Sweden and the European Union.
In that instance, law enforcement monitored the individuals involved, recording covert meetings in restaurants and on public streets, along with the transfer of collected materials and gifts from Russian handlers.
On May 20, 2026, Polish authorities detained three Polish citizens in Kraków who were operating a spy ring for Russian intelligence. The suspects, aged between 48 and 62, gathered information on Polish infrastructure and NATO troop placements while spreading pro-Russian propaganda.
Prosecutors charged the group with sharing state secrets, preparing sabotage, conducting disinformation campaigns, and supporting Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Investigators discovered that the cell conducted firearms training under the direction of an FSB-linked Russian national. Following their arrest, a court in Białystok ordered all three individuals on May 21, 2026, to be held in pre-trial custody for three months as the investigation continued.
