Russian National Suspected in Montenegro Triple Murder Dies by Suicide After Police Standoff

A 30-year-old Russian national suspected of a triple murder at a shooting range in Montenegro committed suicide after opening fire on police officers during an intensive overnight manhunt, local outlet RTCG reported on September 1.
The suspect, Mikhail Nikolaevich Shabunin, was cornered by special police units and army helicopters early in the morning in a forest above the coastal town of Herceg Novi.

Russian authorities, meanwhile, are searching for convicted serial killer Andrey Kiyko, who escaped a military hospital after being recruited from prison to fight in Ukraine. Serving a 25-year sentence for multiple murders and sexual assaults, Kiyko fled a rehabilitation facility after being wounded on the front line, with officials concealing his disappearance for months before launching a public manhunt.
According to RTCG, the shooting occurred on August 31 at the “Češka Zbrojevka” shooting range near Danilovgrad. Shabunin shot and killed three unarmed employees: Podgorica residents Nemanja Kapor, 20, and Petar Globarević, 24, along with 67-year-old Danilovgrad resident Momir Radonjić, before fleeing the scene with firearms.
Following the killings, Shabunin fled in a victim’s car before taking a taxi from Podgorica to Herceg Novi, RTCG reported. Unable to pay for the ride, the suspect left his passport and phone with the driver before entering a local apartment and ultimately escaping into nearby woods, where special forces isolated him.
Police Directorate officials confirmed that law enforcement and the Higher State Prosecutor’s Office in Podgorica are investigating the motive, noting that Shabunin had spent the previous several days at the shooting range, according to RTCG.
Following the incident, the Government of Montenegro declared September 1 and 2 as national days of mourning.
The incident in Montenegro follows the arrest of two former Russian prisoners in Thailand earlier this year for the murder and dismemberment of a Russian businessman. The suspects, who were pardoned for fighting in Ukraine before deserting their military units, reportedly killed the 30-year-old victim over a financial dispute.
