Sean Penn-Produced Ukraine Documentary “Black Sunflowers” Premieres at Toronto International Film Festival

Ukrainian-focused documentary Black Sunflowers, exploring the lives of a young generation navigating adulthood amid Russia’s full-scale war, will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 11.

Directed by James Marcus Haney, the 95-minute documentary will screen as part of TIFF’s Docs program. Hollywood actor and activist Sean Penn, who has been an active supporter of Ukraine, serves as one of the project’s executive producers.

Black Sunflowers portrays a generation of young Ukrainians whose lives have been radically transformed by the full-scale war, balancing the experiences of youth with the realities of the frontline.

The documentary follows ravers, street racers, artists, photographers, and soldiers, including a DJ who joined the military but continues to perform while on leave, a nature photographer who became a war journalist, young soldiers with combat experience, and couples separated by deployments to different sections of the frontline. Their lives move between underground parties, high-speed car races, relationships, plans for the future, and military service.

Through these individual stories, the filmmakers present the war not as an abstract geopolitical conflict but as an experience embedded in the everyday lives of an entire generation.

Haney first traveled to Ukraine in 2022 on assignment for the international organization War Child UK. During that visit, he learned about Ukraine’s underground rave, street-racing, and drifting communities, which continued to exist despite the war.

Over the following three years, Haney divided his time between Kyiv and Los Angeles, immersing himself in these communities while working on the film.

According to the director, the project centers on the experiences of a generation forced to come of age amid the realities of war. He said Western media coverage largely focuses on destruction and combat, often leaving less attention for Ukrainians’ everyday lives and what they continue to fight for.

“Wars aren’t just fought by soldiers, but by entire generations. The film is both a generational portrait and an exploration of war,” Haney said.

Music plays a prominent role in the film, with its soundtrack bringing together Ukrainian, European, and American artists to reflect the musical world of its subjects. The documentary features tracks by Fred Again, Brian Eno, IDLES, Morphine, Sega Bodega, Nastia Vogan, Koloah, and other performers.

The film was created in collaboration with Ukrainian production company Limelite, with Volodymyr Yatsenko, Anna Yatsenko, and Vlad Bolelov among its Ukrainian producers.

Penn’s involvement in Black Sunflowers comes as he is also attached to another film project connected to Ukraine. The American actor is set to appear alongside Adrien Brody in Snake Island, an upcoming film directed by Hollywood filmmaker Doug Liman.

For the production, parts of central Zagreb have been transformed into a wartime setting. Barricades and military equipment were installed near the Esplanade Hotel, while extras wearing Ukrainian military uniforms were also seen during filming.
