On June 16, Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture and Information Policy (MCIP), citing data from the Institute of Mass Information and PEN Ukraine, reported that 207 artists and 106 media workers have lost their lives since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

According to the Ministry, these losses represent not only a human tragedy but a cultural one as well.

“Just as the Stalinist regime targeted a generation of Ukrainian creatives in the 1920s and ’30s, Russia is now systematically erasing Ukraine’s cultural elite,” the statement reads.

The Ministry drew a parallel with the era known as the “Executed Renaissance,” a time when many prominent Ukrainian writers, painters, and musicians were repressed or killed.

“These individuals were the pride of our nation. Today, we are again losing more than just talent—we are losing pieces of our soul,” the Ministry stated.

Ukrainian journalists continue to report under life-threatening conditions, documenting the realities of war and delivering reliable information to both domestic and international audiences.

“Media professionals work around the clock to gather indisputable evidence of the occupiers’ crimes and highlight the strength, bravery, and resilience of our defenders,” officials noted.

The MCIP emphasized that attacks on journalists and media by Russian forces pose a serious threat to freedom of expression and global information security. The Ministry called for remembrance of those who have fallen, underscoring the importance of protecting democratic values and human rights.

Previously, it was reported that the body of Ukrainian journalist Viktoria Roshchyna, who died in Russian captivity, was returned to Ukraine missing several internal organs, potentially to conceal the cause of death.
