262 Men, 104 Women, 12 Children—UN Details Sexual Violence Committed by Russian Forces in Ukraine
The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) has documented 376 cases of sexual violence since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, according to a report released on November 25.
The report details that 262 men, primarily subjected to torture while in captivity in occupied territories or within Russia, are among the victims. Additionally, 104 women and 12 children—10 girls and two boys—have been identified as victims.
“War-related sexual violence is a violation of international human rights, humanitarian, and criminal law,” the HRMMU stated.
In Ukraine, many survivors of war-related sexual violence have come forward. Their testimonies are crucial for ensuring justice, holding perpetrators accountable, and preventing the further spread of this atrocity, according to the HRMMU.
Previously, the UN reported that Russian authorities are systematically torturing Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians, which constitutes a crime against humanity.
