Slovak PM Robert Fico Condemns Opposition’s Kyiv Visit, Calls It ‘Subservience’ Amid Sharp Threats to Ukraine
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has expressed anger over the recent visit of Slovak opposition deputies to Kyiv, calling it a “gesture of subservience” and issuing warnings against Ukraine.
According to Pravda, Fico accused the deputies of attempting to destabilize the government and claimed they were preparing for a “state coup.”
Fico also criticized their alleged actions in Kyiv, stating they were “pledging support for Ukraine’s NATO membership” and hinting at Slovakia’s involvement in sending Western military contingents to Ukraine if the opposition were to come to power. He described this as the most alarming aspect of the visit. There’s no evidence to corroborate these claims.
“The government under my leadership will never support Ukraine’s membership in NATO because it would only lead to a third world war,” Fico declared. He further emphasized that Slovakia would not authorize sending military forces to Ukraine, stating, “Our government will not allow Slovak weapons to be turned against the Russian Federation.”
The Prime Minister also addressed Ukraine’s decision to halt the transit of Russian gas through its territory starting January 1, 2025. He described the move as a significant concern for Slovakia and announced plans to “respond appropriately.” Among his proposed actions, Fico threatened to veto future European Union assistance to Ukraine, underscoring his stance: “Robert Fico is the Prime Minister of Slovakia, not Ukraine’s servant.”
Earlier, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico declined Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s invitation to Kyiv for gas transit discussions, instead proposing talks near the Slovak-Ukrainian border. This follows Ukraine’s cessation of Russian gas transit on January 1, after the expiration of an agreement with Gazprom.
