Sweden has deployed 600 troops to Latvia as part of its first NATO mission, marking a significant step in the country’s integration into the alliance’s security framework.

According to SVT, the deployment was conducted under strict secrecy, with the battalion transported by sea. The troops will remain in Latvia for six months to bolster the security of its border with Russia. This mission aligns with NATO's broader strategy to deter any challenges to the territorial integrity of its member states.

Colonel Henrik Rosdahl, leading the Swedish contingent, emphasized the readiness of the battalion, stating, “We either attack, defend, or hold our position.” The soldiers have been engaged in intensive preparations, including training and logistical exercises, to ensure their readiness for any potential scenario.

It is the first time Swedish ground forces have been stationed abroad under NATO command.

The last time Swedish troops participated in European peacekeeping operations was in the 1990s, during missions in Kosovo.

Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson highlighted the importance of this mission, noting that it underscores Sweden’s commitment to NATO's principles and its readiness to contribute to the alliance’s collective security initiatives.

The NATO division commander in the Baltics, Major General Jette Albinus, praised the professionalism and preparedness of Swedish forces, stating that their participation strengthens the alliance’s capacity to respond to potential threats in the region.

Earlier, Swedish Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Micael Bydén warned that Russian leader Vladimir Putin aims to expand control over the Baltic Sea, with a particular focus on Gotland Island.
