A Russian military ammunition depot was reportedly struck in the city of Neya, in Kostroma region, prompting evacuations and hours of explosions, according to multiple open-source intelligence groups and the Kostroma region governor on January 6.

The attack occurred late Monday night into Tuesday, January 6, and reportedly hit a major arsenal operated by Russia’s Main Missile and Artillery Directorate (GRAU ), which oversees missile and artillery stockpiles for the Russian military, OSINT community Exilenova+ reported.

“Neya… Kostroma Oblast, overnight a Russian Ministry of Defense ammunition depot—military unit 55486, the 100th GRAU arsenal—was destroyed. Evacuation of local residents is underway in the city,” OSINT community Supernova+ wrote.

Exilenova+ added that the strike initially raised questions due to continuous explosions—described locally as repeated “pops”—lasting throughout the night.

However, those doubts were dispelled after regional authorities confirmed the evacuation of residents from areas closest to the GRAU facility.

“This is not the first attack on this GRAU site. Today, it appears the strike was successful,” Exilenova+ said.

The governor of the Kostroma region later acknowledged damage to “a few objects by drone debris” in a post on Telegram. Thick plumes of smoke were visible over the city, according to photos and videos circulating online.

The targeted facility plays a critical role in Russia’s military logistics. According to OSINT analysts, the 100th GRAU arsenal is responsible for forming and maintaining ammunition reserves for Russia’s western and central operational directions.

These stockpiles are then distributed to lower-level arsenals and frontline supply bases.

Earlier, satellite images emerged confirming the extensive damage at Russia’s 51st GRAU ammunition depot in the Kirzhach district of the Vladimir region.
