Australia is evaluating a Ukrainian request for the transfer of its retiring fleet of Tiger Armed Reconnaissance Helicopters as it prepares a new package of military aid for Kyiv, according to Militarnyi on December 3.

Militarnyi said the Australian Army’s Tiger helicopters are being withdrawn from service as part of a transition to US-made AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, with 22 Tigers scheduled to be phased out by 2028 and 29 Apaches due to be fully delivered by 2029.

The outlet reported that the potential transfer is focused on strengthening Ukraine’s ability to counter Russian drones, noting that the helicopters can employ a 30 mm GIAT cannon, 70 mm rockets and AGM-114 Hellfire missiles already used by Ukrainian forces.

ABC News also added that the government is considering “offloading” the Tiger fleet to Kyiv a year after controversy in Australia over the decision to dismantle and bury MRH-90 Taipan helicopters instead of sending them to Ukraine, and said any helicopter transfer would be separate from a pending increase in financial support.

The broadcaster quoted Defense Minister Richard Marles as telling parliament the government would “very shortly” announce its next round of assistance to Ukraine and saying, “Over the course of the last four years, the people of Ukraine have been absolutely inspirational,” as Canberra builds on about $0.99 billion in military support already pledged.

Earlier, it was reported that Estonia had provided short-range air defense systems, including Mistral—type missiles and launchers, to Ukraine in a new military aid package, aimed at helping defend against Russian air and drone threats.
