On August 18 US President Donald Trump announced a big step toward peace amid Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, following a series of high-level meetings at the White House.

The discussions brought together Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders who came to support Ukraine and the pursuit of lasting peace in Europe.

Trump highlighted the next steps in the peace process:

“At the conclusion of the meetings, I called Putin, and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelenskyy. After that meeting takes place, we will have a Trilat, which would be the two Presidents, plus myself. Again, this was a very good, early step for a War that has been going on for almost four years. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, are coordinating with Russia and Ukraine. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Earlier, Trump had held preliminary talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, laying the groundwork for the planned direct meeting with Zelenskyy.

During the White House meetings, Trump and the visiting European leaders—including President Emmanuel Macron of France, President Alexander Stubb of Finland, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy, Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the United Kingdom, Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte—discussed security guarantees for Ukraine.

Trump said, “I had a very good meeting with distinguished guests… During the meeting we discussed Security Guarantees for Ukraine, which guarantees would be provided by the various European countries, in coordination with the United States of America. Everyone is very happy about the possibility of peace for Russia and Ukraine.”

The White House confirmed that the meetings with President Zelenskyy and European leaders have concluded.

Earlier, President Trump, during talks with Zelenskyy, addressed the question of a ceasefire in Ukraine, noting that discussions should move toward a broader peace deal.
