Brussels Probes TikTok After Poland Flags AI-Generated Videos Calling to Leave the EU

The European Commission said it will examine whether TikTok complied with EU rules after Poland warned that artificial intelligence-generated videos were urging a so-called “Polexit”—shorthand for Poland leaving the European Union, modeled on the term “Brexit —in what Warsaw described as a coordinated disinformation effort, according to RMF24 on January 2.
The outlet reported that Polish Deputy Digitalization Minister Dariusz Standerski wrote to the Commission in late December calling for supervisory action and possible proceedings under the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) over content portraying young women wearing Polish national symbols and encouraging Poland to leave the European Union.

In the letter, Standerski said: “The disclosed content poses a threat to public order, information security, and the integrity of democratic processes in Poland and across the European Union,” adding that the use of synthetic audiovisual materials suggested TikTok was failing to meet obligations as a “Very large online platform.”

A European Commission spokesperson said, “In March 2024, the Commission has already sent a request for information to several online platforms, including TikTok,” seeking details on measures taken to tackle AI-related risks.
Poland’s government spokesperson, Adam Szłapka, said the videos were “undoubtedly” Russian disinformation, pointing to what he described as Russian syntax in the recordings and arguing the message was contrary to Polish interests while aligning with Russian interests.
Earlier, it was reported that analysts identified hundreds of anonymous TikTok accounts amplifying pro-Russian narratives and boosting radical parties, and said complaints were referred to EU authorities.
At the same time, TikTok cited enforcement against deceptive behavior.
