The Burshtyn Thermal Power Plant (TPP) in Ukraine’s Ivano-Frankivsk region has sustained irreparable damage from Russian shelling, according to Svitlana Onyshchuk, governor of the Ivano-Frankivsk region.

Onyshchuk stated that the plant had been targeted by Russian forces more than 12 times. “We’ve understood for some time now that the Burshtyn TPP is beyond repair,” she said, emphasizing the severity of the destruction.

This destruction poses a significant threat to the city of Burshtyn’s ability to provide heat and hot water during the winter months. To mitigate this risk, the city has already committed to allocating six boiler houses to serve social facilities and residents.

The plant was first targeted in October 2022, as part of a wider assault on energy facilities across Ukraine. This month, the shelling intensified, with four rockets striking the Burshtyn TPP’s open switchgear.

On June 25, Ukrainian authorities reported that recent Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have resulted in the loss of approximately 9 gigawatts of generating capacity, which takes up half of Ukraine’s power grid.
