China Calls for Ceasefire, Negotiations, and End to Sanctions to Resolve Ukraine War
China continues to maintain its position that, in order to end the war in Ukraine, there needs to be an immediate ceasefire, the start of negotiations, and an avoidance of sanctions and economic pressure.
This was stated on Tuesday by China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi during a UN Security Council meeting.
Wang Yi said that first, fighting must be stopped, and the expansion of hostilities to new territories must be prevented.
Secondly, dialogue and negotiations should begin without delay, as this is the "only viable way" to resolve the "Ukrainian crisis."
Thirdly, according to China's Foreign Minister, it is essential to "avoid letting the crisis spill over" into the global economy. He clarified that this means refraining from sanctions and blocking certain areas of global trade.
In this context, the Chinese representative stated that this threatens sustainable development, which is one of the UN's key goals.
The UN meeting where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other world leaders spoke took place during the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 23-25 in New York.
During that same meeting, Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva promoted his peace plan, co-developed with China, despite Ukraine already rejecting it as "destructive."
