Ukraine is working on developing a mechanism to grant the status of a foreign Ukrainian, particularly for Crimean Tatars residing in Turkey.

This was stated by Ukraine’s Ambassador to Turkey, Nariman Dzhelyal, in an interview with RBC-Ukraine on August 4.

According to him, the process is already underway, though it is accompanied by a number of technical and legal challenges. The diplomat placed particular emphasis on Crimean Tatars—citizens of Turkey—who, following the adoption of the law on multiple citizenship, have expressed a desire to obtain Ukrainian passports.

“This is their conscious choice, driven not by preferences but by a political sense: Crimea—their ancestral land—is part of Ukraine,” Dzhelyal emphasized.

He also added that these individuals wish to be able to freely visit both Ukraine and Crimea after its de-occupation.

Earlier, it was reported that Ukraine’s parliament passed a bill on multiple citizenship in its second reading, with 243 lawmakers voting in favor.

The legislation permits Ukrainian citizens to hold passports from other countries and outlines the conditions under which multiple citizenship is allowed. It enables individuals to acquire foreign citizenship without losing their Ukrainian one. Additionally, the bill allows foreign nationals to obtain Ukrainian citizenship under specified conditions.
