Danish PM Calls NATO Membership Central to Zelenskyy’s Victory Plan
The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s victory plan contains “really, really good ideas”, but the central component remains NATO membership, said Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, reported Danish outlet DR on October 17.
Speaking ahead of the EU summit, Frederiksen stressed that NATO membership is the most crucial security guarantee for Ukraine.
“This war should never have started, and none of us want anything more than peace,” Frederiksen said.
“I agree with Zelenskyy that the key element of this plan is NATO membership, which is the most important life insurance we can offer Ukraine.”
However, she acknowledged that not all NATO members, including the US, are currently in favor of offering Ukraine an invitation to join the alliance.
“There are still those who remain very skeptical about Ukraine’s NATO membership. Denmark is actively supporting it, and I will bring it up today,” Frederiksen said, referring to discussions at the EU summit.
The Danish Prime Minister also noted the need for a “democratic and fair” resolution to the war between Ukraine and Russia.
However, she expressed doubts about Russia’s willingness to embrace democratic principles and called for continued defense spending by NATO countries to ensure peace and security.
“Unfortunately, I see no signs that Russia will recognize any democracy… It is now an enemy to all of us, and the victory plan should reflect just how dangerous Russia is,” she added.
Earlier, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte confirmed his awareness of Ukraine’s newly unveiled “victory plan” presented by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on October 16.
